When I was in Paris, I found it to just mean bread and butter on many breakfast menus (with some confiture) so maybe the original meaning isn't entirely obsolete! Love this beautiful, fresh summer tartine. Cucumber and butter (or cream cheese) is a sandwich match made in heaven (my snobby English grandparents made cucumber sandwiches when they were alive and I liked them very much) and your version looks entirely elegant!
